Glen Canyon Recreation Area

After camping on the beach of Lake Powell we backtracked south on Highway 89 to south of Page, Arizona to the Horseshoe Bend Overlook on the Colorado River. There is room for smaller RVs in the dirt parking lot here but it would be risky to attempt bringing a larger rig in simply due to the large number of cars coming and going.  We obviously arrived during Spring Break for Europeans as I’d say only 30% of the people here were speaking English.  German, Russian, Finnish and the spectrum of Asian languages were covered so it’s possible that we just arrived during a busy week.

The overlook is 3/4 mile from the parking lot and the hilly path is very sandy so where more appropriate shoes than we did!  The overlook itself is not fenced in any manner so the its up to you how close you want to stand.

The people-watching is nearly as good as the view — I got a big kick out of the caution the little girl kneeling took compared to all the adults.

On our trek back out we passed a foreign bridal couple — he appeared much more enthusiastic than she did as she tried to navigate all that white tulle down the red, sandy path!

In Page we stopped at the Carl Hayden Visitor Center and took the tour of the Glen Canyon dam which forms Lake Powell. When northbound on Highway 89, the Visitor Center is on your right immediately after crossing the Colorado River. There is room for big rigs here — after turning into the complex head straight toward the parking in the back of the lot. The road loops around to an upper lot and then exits.

The following photo is for Dad — we loitered during our dam tour waiting for an Airstream to cross the bridge.  You’ll have to click on the photo to enlarge it and zoom in on the left side of the bridge– she’s crossing left to right.

Between Page and Lone Rock there are several scenic overlooks and entrances into the Recreation Area that give splendid views of Lake Powell.

One of the scenic overlooks — not enough room for a big rig here.
